Cellular spacing: analysis and modelling of retinal mosaics
نویسنده
چکیده
A key step in nervous system development is the spatial positioning of neurons within a structure. In this chapter I review the mechanisms by which the cellular spacing of neuronal networks emerges. In particular, I focus on the spatial distribution of neurons within the retina. The retina is ideal for studying such developmental mechanisms because of its multilayered structure and specific neurochemical markers can reliably label all neurons of a given type. This chapter describes the quantitative methods used for assessing spatial regularity of neuronal distributions and computational methods for simulating these distributions.

Influence of cell fate mechanisms upon retinal mosaic formation: a modelling study.
Many types of retinal neurone are arranged in a spatially regular manner so that the visual scene is uniformly sampled. Several mechanisms are thought to be involved in the development of regular cellular positioning. One early-acting mechanism is the lateral inhibition of neighbouring cells from acquiring the same fate, mediated by Delta-Notch signalling. We have used computer modelling to tes...
متن کاملRetinal Mosaics: Pattern Formation Driven by Local Interactions between Homotypic Neighbors
Individual types of retinal neurons are distributed across the retina as regular arrays of cells, commonly referred to as “retinal mosaics” (Wässle and Riemann, 1978). This regularity in their patterning is generally assumed to ensure that all locations across the retina are sub-served by every type of retinal neuron, each participating in their own unique way to the local computations carried ...
متن کاملModelling retinal mosaic development with dendritic outgrowth and lateral cell movement
Retinal cells are regularly spaced across the retina and form mosaic-like patterns. The developmental processes involved in producing such mosaics are unclear, although recent evidence suggests that lateral movement of cells may be involved [1]. In this paper, we extend a model of neurite outgrowth [2] to allow cells to move as well as to change their dendritic extent. Starting from random init...
متن کاملDeterminants of the exclusion zone in dopaminergic amacrine cell mosaics.
A fundamental organizing feature of the retina is the presence of regularly spaced distributions of neurons, yet we have little knowledge of how this patterning emerges during development. Among these retinal mosaics, the spatial organization of the dopaminergic amacrine cells is unique: using nearest-neighbor and Vornoi domain analysis, we found that the dopaminergic amacrine cells were neithe...
متن کاملNumerical Modelling of Dynamic Compaction in Dry Sandy Soils for Determination of Effective Print Spacing
Dynamic compaction (DC) is a widely used soil improvement method in dry and/or saturated soils. The design of DC treatment is usually carried out based on the past experiences and empirical relations. In order to clarify the ambiguities in DC processes, numerical modeling of DC in dry granular soils has been considered using a dynamic finite element code. Using the developed model, two design c...
